JCT li - inspiration of the month.

Inspiration of the month, this is where we talk about artists, designers and creatives who we find inspirational.

JCT Li is a Taiwanese artist who lives in Berlin, Germany. JCT Li originally studied Interactive Media Design in Singapore before relocating to Germany in 2008. It was at the Bauhaus University of Weimar that that she received her MFA in public art and new artistic strategies in 2010.

JCT Li has an ongoing project that she has been working on since 2010 ‘HAVE A NICE DAY’. So what is it? Basically, it’s a digital collage series containing random pictures of anonymous people. The images are reprocessed using digital manipulations making the picture unrecognisable. The series has been described as ‘digital recycling’ as well as ‘satirical art’.

Satirical art is “a literary technique of writing or art which principally ridicules its subject often as an intended means of provoking or preventing change; humour is often used to aid this.”

I was originally draw to JCT Li's work because of the colours and the way the art looks like it is floating bringing a sense of peace to me. Now knowing how she has produced the art you can see how JCT Li uses it to show how our perception of aesthetics is strongly influenced by digitally altered images. It’s quite poetic, I interpret this as helping to show us how using filters and editing them completely distorts the image.

In JCT Li newer work there is a more abstract feel which JCT describes as an “aim to convey certain scenes to the viewer that trigger their own, vast imagination.”
